It seems like yesterday that thirty or so employees decided Billerica needed a Credit Union. On October 18, 1971 the Secretary of State of Massachusetts declared the Billerica Municipal Employees Credit Union a legally organized and existing corporation. The credit union was accepted as a benefit for the employees of the town of Billerica. At the time, the talk was about the possibility of putting together enough money to make short term loans just in case one of our friends found the times difficult.
The first Board of Directors comprised of Bill Laurendeau, Bill Kerivan, Bill Lee, Charlie Phair, Ralph McKenna, Ed O’Mahony, Kenny Powderly, James Hanlon, Tom Mulligan, Joe Burke, and James Dangora: did the research, laid the ground work, took the chance and embraced the philosophy of all credit unions (People helping people).
Well, the board of directors has changed over the years, our office has moved from one building to another, our staff is the best you will find if you’re looking for professional, courteous service. Our membership has grown to over 90% of the towns employees. We have surpassed the ten million dollar benchmark. We are now able to loan monies for assistance during tough times as well as funding dreams and ambitions. With over 45 years in business as a credit union, we are very pleased at the positive growth that we have experienced. The Board of Directors will continue to wisely and conservatively invest your shares, study new methods of operation, and introduce new programs to benefit all of our members.
